The New Year is upon us and naturally our thoughts turn to things that we would like to do differently this year. In doing so, some people make a slew of resolutions that while good intentioned, always seem to go the way of the one missing sock in the wash in a very short time. Others revisit in their minds, goals and things that they failed to do in the past year and wonder where they went wrong, thus bringing stressors from the old year into the new one. For me, a brand new year means new opportunities, a second chance to do the things that didn’t get done in the old year, a sort of ‘do-over’ -- this rare opportunity where you get a chance to redo something in life. But where to start, you ask? A first step might be to determine what it is that you want to do. Is it to lose weight as is so many people’s goals, including my own? Have you decided that you need a career or job change? If so, be realistic. Realize that losing weight or finding a new job takes time. While chocolate is no longer just for breakfast anymore, a sensible plan will help you to succeed in both areas. Start small on the diet front by cutting back on what you eat. Maybe try having just a salad for lunch. Why not take a short walk on your lunch hour? Take the stairs instead of the elevator each time you go to another floor at your job. When it comes to your career, ask yourself are you living your passion or purpose in your current position? We all have some life’s purpose experts on the subject state. The problem however, is discovering what it is. Start by making a list of what feeds your passion or life’s purpose. Do you long to travel and would do so at the drop of a Donut if you had the money or opportunity to do so? Are you interested in learning about different people or different cultures? Do you like working with people? Is your inner Picasso or Van Gogh longing to burst free on a blank canvas? If your goal
in 2008 is to start living your passion or purpose, then the next step
would be to start researching the kinds of things that interest you. The
Internet brings research, career tips and even jobs or careers literally
right into our homes. Updating your resume may be necessary as a third
step. Taking a class or two to update job skills or to learn a new one
may be all that is needed to follow your passion.
